Washington Family Descendants - May 16-17-18, 2003. Welcome to the photo remembrances of our trip to Savannah, GA for the 49th Annual Meeting of The National Society of the Washington Family Descendants.

May 16th ... Friday

The annual meeting of The National Society of the Washington Family Descendants was headquartered at the Savannah Days Inn - Suite Historic District.

The Chart House Restaurant with its ramp from W. Bay Street was the site of our 3 nightly banquets and meetings.

Mr. Hugh Golson, honored educator and the speaker at Friday evenings dinner, who spoke about Savannah's historic preservation with emphasis on his family's Mulberry Grove Plantation site, chatting with First Vice President General Richard D. Jordan III (Tori's dad) and wife Jo.

May 17th ... Saturday

After having breakfast at the charming Cobblestone Inn, on the slope between W. Bay Street and River Street, Tori and Paul joined 40 additional members of the Society on a bus tour of many intriguing and interesting sights in historic and beautiful Savannah, Georgia.

Saturday night dinner speaker Gordon B. Smith, who spoke about the two tragic battles of Savannah during the Revolutionary War which both had high casualties among the losing Americans and French. In attendance the youngest member present, 8th grader Mary Louise Woody.

ABOUT THE SAVANNAH HISTORICAL DISTRICT:

* Bounded by Broad Street on the East, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. on the West, Hall Street to the South and the Savannah Rivr the North.

* There are 25 parklike Squares when including Colonial Park Cemetery and Forsyth Park. By name: Franklin, Johnson, Reynolds, Warren, Washington, Liberty, Telfair, Wright, Oglethorpe, Columbia, Greene, Elbert, Orleans, Chippewa (Forrest Gump), Crawford, Pulaski, Madison, Lafayette, Troup, Chatham, Monterey, Calhoun and Whitefield.

* A number of historic churches including: Christ Episcopal, First African Baptist, Trinity United Methodist, Independent Presbyterian, Wesley (John Wesley in his early years preached here) Monumental United Methodist, Cathedral of St. John The Baptist, Lutheran Church of The Ascension and one of the countries oldest synagogues Temple Mickve Isreal.

* The City Market with its many unique shops and art galleries.

* The vista and beauty of Riverfront Plaza stretching along the Savannah River with Factors Walk and River Street offering wonderful dining and unique shopping experiences.

* Noteworthy is the birthplace and home of Juliette Gordon Low the founder of the Girl Scouts of America.

* In Emmel Park located on E. Bay Street are the two Revolutionary War cannons given to the city by George Washington on his offical visit to Savannah.

May 18th ... Sunday

After breakfast at the Daybreak Restaurant located in the Days Inn we walked 3 blocks to Christ Church, The Episcopal Mother Church of Georgia, for the Sunday morning Worship Service. The church is located on the southeast corner of Johnson Square. This Square has a memorial monument honoring Nahanael Greene the Revolutionary War General and hero. The remains of Greene are buried under this monument.
